Abstract (ENG): The technology of smart speakers is often associated with being surveilled in one’s own home. This raises privacy concerns in users which might affect their adoption and use behavior. In this qualitative study we investigate the influence of privacy related issues on different phases of smart speaker adoption. We recruited 24 participants in Germany, who we monitored over 6 months. We exposed the participants to three interventions which were designed to trigger privacy concerns in using the technology. The results show that privacy concerns act rather as a barrier before adoption, while in the phase of the active use, privacy has a diminished influence. Users reported that they would only terminate the use of the smart speaker, if they were directly affected. Information about negative ramification from data leaks of third parties are dismissed.
