Abstract (ENG): Deep geothermal power potentially represents a sustainable source of base-load-capable energy generation [1]. Similar to the use of further renewable forms of energy, the implementaion of geothermal heat and power plants (GHPP) in South-East Germany has triggered social resistance that led to the failure of several deep geothermal projects in the recent past due to intense activity of local citizens’ initiatives [2;3]. Our research aims to identify and categorize the criteria (‘acceptance criteria’) crucial to assess the implementation of GHPP in variuos population groups involved and to create a strategy to reduce and prevent scientifically unsubstantiated concerns and overall objections in various social groups of the society against GHPP. The first step of our project comprises a literature review of research articles focusing on the public acceptance of GHPP, published in the past decade (2011-2021). This study will be followed by expert interviews, carried out to achieve a more detailled overview on the currently relevant acceptance criteria to successfully establish GHPP in South-East Germany. The results of these interviews will be the basis for a survey that will be perfomed, planned in a community in Bavarian with a running GHPP (e.g., Unterhaching), in one where a GHPP failed (e.g., Puchheim), and in a community in South-East Germany with potentially good conditions to establish a GHPP in the nearer future (planned GHPP in South-East Germany). The results of this survey form the fundament for the implementation of a real-world laboratory. This strategy will be performed in close cooperation with all interest groups and stakeholders involved to ensure practicability and feasability. The literature review is currently in the final data analysis stage, and expert interviews are under preparation.
