| Abstract: |
This essay takes a close look how the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) via virtual reality applications is picked up and portrayed in digital games.
Af ter all, video and computer games provide players with virtual worlds. They send
players, and their characters – particularly in action games and first person shooters –
into theaters of war that will be lef t by many soldiers suf fering from PTSD af ter their missions. Taking Call of Duty: Black Ops III (Treyarch 2015) as a leading example this article shows that the idea of a double virtual world, one with a virtual reality (VR) of therapeutical intention, not only takes the current medical status into consideration,
but it sometimes also uses it for the orchestration of utopian and dystopian storylines. |
