Meaningful work (MW) is widely recognized as a critical driver of motivation, well-being, and persistence and is more prevalent among entrepreneurs. However, the prevailing view of MW in entrepreneurship often assumes a static, uniformly positive experience. This longitudinal study challenges that assumption by investigating how entrepreneurs’ experiences of MW fluctuate over time and the strategies they employ to navigate these changes. Drawing on a twelve-week qualitative diary study and in-depth interviews with 21 early-stage entrepreneurs, we develop a dynamic model of MW in the entrepreneurial context.
This study makes several key contributions. First, it provides a nuanced understanding of how entrepreneurs personalize and experience MW along dual dimensions of broader purpose and self-realization. Second, it identifies distinct patterns of MW fluctuation, highlighting the impact of both episodic and periodic depletions. Third, it introduces the concept of structural crafting as a novel mechanism through which entrepreneurs actively shape their work environments to restore meaningfulness. By illuminating the dynamic interplay between personalization, fluctuation, and restoration of MW, this research offers valuable insights for entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers seeking to foster sustainable and fulfilling entrepreneurial journeys. Our findings underscore the importance of recognizing and supporting the evolving needs of entrepreneurs as they navigate the complex and often turbulent path of venture creation. |
