Abstract (ENG): The adoption of Privacy-by-Default (PBD) approaches in digital applications is widely celebrated as a proactive measure to protect individuals' personal information. When viewed through the lens of information boundary theory, this design approach presents a paradox. Information boundary theory posits that individuals highly value their ability to actively manage and negotiate the limits of their personal information. By automatically enforcing privacy controls, PDB applications may inadvertently lower users' sense of autonomy - they no longer engage in actively setting their boundaries, which can lead to a diminished perception of control over their personal information. We aim to contribute by unraveling an autonomy-disclosure paradox in the context of privacy defaults in mobile apps that challenges the existing notion of privacy designs. We plan to do so by conducting an online field experiment.
