Abstract (ENG): Both cellular communications networks and broadcast networks have inherent limitations Therefore neither of them is ideal for the variety af services which customers will expect in the future. On the other hand, the combination of both networks - which we will call hybrid networks - will be able to accomodate practically all conceivable kinds of services. This paper shows how IP Datacast, a system just being specified by the DVB Project will provide a framework for hybrid networks incorporating a DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld) point-to-multipoint downstream and a GPRS or UMTS cellular communications network. The ad-hoc group CBMS (Convergence of Broadcast and Mobile Services) of the DVB Project's Technical Module is working on the IP Datacast specification. this paper describes the current activities of CBMS and presents the contributions of the author to IP Datacast.
