| Abstract (ENG): |
An emerging consensus in the circular economy literature posits that its full sustainability potential can only be realized when integrated with sufficiency – the moderation of consumption. Sufficiency-oriented circular business models present paradoxical tensions for many firms, particularly in the manufacturing sector, which underpins dematerialized and recycling-based circular models through innovative product design. These tensions emerge because sufficiency-driven approaches, such as designing durable and repairable products, inherently reduce recurring revenues by decreasing purchase frequency. Despite their significance, sufficiency-related tensions and the strategies firms use to address them remain underexamined in empirical research. Drawing on paradox theory, this multiple case study explores the tensions encountered by firms implementing sufficiency-oriented circular business models and the strategies they adopt to navigate these challenges. Our findings reveal two key tensions: (1) market-based conflicts due to the incompatibility of sufficiency-oriented circular business models with growth-driven economic structures, and (2) technical conflicts arising from contradictions within circular practices. Notably, decision-makers often adopt a paradoxical mindset to navigate these challenges effectively. |
