Abstract (ENG): | This paper examines challenges and opportunities for ethically respon-sible action and the creation of meaning in operational research (OR). Historical traitsof ethics in OR as well as shortcomings of a restricted view of OR, i.e. concerninglong-term or international impacts, are presented. Different ethical approaches andimperatives for OR in corporate and public decision mak ing, including stakeholderintegration and sustainability aspects, are explained. The author underlines thenecessity of an interdisciplinary, reflective approach to recognize explicit and implicitvalues, interests and relations hips between the actors involved. Being aware thatresponsibility cannot be delegated to principals, codes, systems or algorithms, ORacademi cs, practitioners and educators can create meaning through an active searchand development of innovative methods and decision alternatives which consider thelong-term consequences for the societies involved. They can adapt to the uniquechallenges of the situation through moderating a broader discours e and integratingstakeholders’ suggestions in a process of developing alternatives and innovations. After formulating five major fields of ethical consideration in OR and decisionmaking, the article gives practical examples how OR academics, practitioners andeducators can contribute their part to the creation of meaning in research, businesspractice, education and societal developm ent |
